Unable to use my preferred 3-4 Varient rank up gem

I recently explored Var 5.2 100% , I got the generic 2017 , 3-4 rank up gem . I wanted to use this on my rank 3 Hulkbuster to rank him up but in rank up screen it only shows me my other Tech 3-4 rank gem which is not year specific . I am unable to use the year specific generic one instead it shows the Class one . I am missing something ? Let me share your thoughts .
