Mid combo special 3

I was fighting a Hulk(Ragnarulk) on Cavalier difficulty of EQ, 2.2. I hit him with a medium hit, reached 2 bars of power and was trying to continue my combo. When all of a sudden before my second hit, light attack could land, the defender used his special 3. How or why is he able to use hit special in the middle of my combo. To be perfectly clear, he did NOT end his attack while a smash was active. There is no active unstoppable node. There is absolutely no reason for my combo to be interrupted by the defender and yet it was. This has happened before but, I ignored it assuming I made an error of some sort. This time I know for sure I had not made an error of any kind.
