Aegon: When do you activate a special?

When I tried to activate a SP1 after the second Medium hit, I somehow missed the timing and the opponent blocks or walks away. This happened multiple times so then I thought: Why not try a Light ending combo before activating the special? Yeah, it paid off, now I don't have to worry about getting hit due to a stupid mistiming.

I was wondering how y'all deal with it. Let's share our opinions!

Edit: If you don't use it after your combo that's also fine. Forgot to add that option.

It took me dying like 20 times, but eventually you learn to throw the sp1 after a medium

Or option one. One thing I've learned to help the sp1 connect is to let the 2 hits of the last medium finish before throwing your special. If you throw your sp1 before your medium finishes, the opponent is bound to block it.
