Does Apoc need awakening?

Just pulled a 4* Apocalypse. And I have a 4* generic awakening gem. Does he need awakened or should I awaken my 4* AA instead?

Awaken AA, it propels him to a whole new level

Apoc does not need his awakened ability, though it is very nice
