Trying to figure out why on streak 44 would I get a death match.

That’s because you’re using R1/R2 instead of sticking with R4/R5 or 6*.

I've always used r2 and r3 5 stars and never got this

I grind arena every day. After streak 17 or 18 you can use R1-R2 for a couple of rounds, but after that if I’m not using R4/R5 I get death matches.

I just read that some guy says as long as you run one R3 and two R2s after streak 18, you won’t get any death matches. So, make sure you have one R3 in your team at all times.
