Please remove the pointless year restriction on the rank up gems from variants

Can anyone explain the rationale behind this decision? Why can they only be used by pre-2017 champions?

I don’t understand why you think they’re pointless. There’s tons of pre 2017 champions that are amazing and totally worth ranking up.
Anyway the RUGs from Variants were introduced to encourage players to rank champs that were released earlier.
If you run down the list of every Champion released from the beginning of the game until 2017, there were some solid options, no question but not everybody had a Hyperion or Stark Spidey right off the bat as a five-star, so they would drink up whatever they could and eventually usually had a Sophie's choice of sorts where you had the materials to rank up only one or the other especially at a time when resources were a lot rarer to get their hands on. So having a gem like this made it a lot easier to coordinate who you wanted to rank up so that way you can save your resources for newer Champions and use the gems for older ones. Essentially a "Have your cake and eat it too" scenario.
Also do remember that this was all waaaaaay before the buff program, so this was before Colossus, King Goot, Venompool or Hulkbuster got some love and now newer players who don't have any of the aforementioned buffed Champs can rank them up without having to worry about not being able to take up their Warlock or Cosmic Ghost Rider.
There's a reason why you can't put the cart before the horse.
