    You get shards for playing

Practice, testing nodes with specific champs, use the stash of compensation war items, get shards

Yeah if you're the type who likes to strategize, figure out specific node /champ combos, use up items, get some shards, etc.

I know it's a controversial statement but some people do actually like doing it.

Depending on what tier you are in (outside of the top 5 tiers) you can increase/decrease your tier ahead of a new season

Many alliances use the off season to re-arrange rosters and map placement to plan for the next season. Testing out various placements, and strategically determining battle groups, and alliance switching.

Others use it for the 2* "Dude hold my beer..." fights....

Loyalty. Only reason I put champs down in off season.

Ehh, not really, unless your ally forces y'all to place and win wars so that you guys can farm loyalty/shards. Also I think higher tiers are getting High Ground this season so it allows practice :)
I usually join with the most meme defence during off season and have fun with unique attackers while attacking :D
