King Groot synergy with Man Thing not working

Since recently I've been using King Groot a lot and using him to auto fight in RoL.
The Man Thing synergy states that that he should be getting 2 extra furies with his Malice but I have yet to see this happen. Is this me misunderstanding the synergy or is it broken?

I use a Samsung Galaxy S21 running Android 11
and this seems to happen in all single player game modes at least(have yet to try it in AQ or AW)
