Game restart cause when switching apps?

What is the determining factor when the game will reset or stay where it's at when switching between apps? Sometimes I'll jump to change my music or answer a text, and switch back to the game right where I left off and sometimes I'll do the same thing and the game will reset itself. Is there a specific amount of time that the game will reset itself if you're out of the app or is it all random?

it is not time and it is not random. I believe there are (at least) two things going on that cause the game to sometimes restart when you switch out and back into it. The first are resources. Your device swaps resources the game is using out to free resources for other apps to use when you bring them to the foreground. Above a certain critical point the game client decides it is better to restart than reload everything. The other thing going on is there are messages being sent back and forth between the game client and the game servers, and if enough of those are missed when the game client is swapped out the game decides to restart to resynchronize itself.
