Does anyone know why the screen border goes black?

Recently during arena ( I think it was crystal trove) during some fights, the border around the fight screen went black. It didn't seem like a bug but intentional. Anyone know why?

Not that I can remember. Which made me wonder if it was a new thing kabam had brought in
