Can some pre 12.0 players enlighten me?

I am genuinely curious about the power of the champions that got nerfed in 12.0 before they got nerfed. Can someone please explain why they were good pre 12.0? Thanks in advance

Thor's damage back then was INSANE. I swear he could kill make jokes of health bars faster than Hercules.
