It's when and attack misses due to distance. Example, using a light attack when the opponent is on the other side of the arena

“Whiff” in baseball terms is “swing and a miss”.

You attempted to attack, but attack missed.

Yes, can also mean to smell something.. aka “get a whiff of this”. Either literally (smelling), or figuratively (politics, something doesn’t “smell” right about a proposed bill, etc)
