If you play the game/use your phone a lot, a 4 year old phone is likely just suffering from battery degradation. Mine gets quite hot as well, but it’s because my battery is fried.

Might seem strange. But are you playing at a high refresh rate?
I just got a new phone aswell (motorola edge 20) and when playing on 144hz my phone really heats up also. But when I switch to 60hz it is still just 39*C after more than half an hour.
You might want to try it.
And honostly, I don`t even like the 144 or even 120hz modes. The animations seem off. Like they shock.

Not sure if your device has it but putting it to low power mode definitely minimizes the heat for mine
