If it's a Skill gem I'd absolutely use it on him. A generic I'd probably only use if you're taking him to R4. As far as his sig you either want it at 1, 65, or 200. Personally I wouldn't invest more than sig 65 unless again, you're planning to R4 him.

I have this situation. Hes my first 6s r4 and would be more fun if awakened. Been itching to use the generic gem lol

Honestly 5* gems are becoming so readily available that any 5* champ that you enjoy using would be worth a gem on. Especially one that's already rank 5

Personally I think if you're investing the R4 mats into a champ that has a noticeable benefit from their awakened ability, it's worth it to use a gem unless you're planning to take up another champ that needs it more. But that's just me
