Is protection the new true focus and when will it end?

I enjoy having different nodes and having to work out counters but I already struggle to find time to play and having protection added on almost every fight isn’t helping.
I would prefer bigger health pools than doing 90-100% less damage.

But particularly annoying when you have a passive AI who won’t throw a special.

For example, getting an intercept necessary to get damage on a protection node.

So you take off protection
Intercept
get a few hits in
Try to bait a special
Defender clams up until protection returns.

And over and over again. It’s just a stupid, boring fight when the AI slow plays it when the node already forced super slow play.
