State of the game & potential solution

Ok so this post is either gonna be real good, or real bad. But hear me out before reacting to it.

First things first, the game is not in a good place right now. And the longer it goes on, the more I think Kabam doesn’t actually have a functional test department.

Before I continue with complaints, let me offer a potential solution.

Slow down on the new content. Again, just hear me out on this. What if we only had one new champ per month? That way there is more time for Kabam to design the champions kit, test it, and more importantly: make sure the champ is actually usable in day-to-day fights (sidequest, battlegrounds ect…).

Adding on to the above, if a champion is given more attention the first time around, then they will be less likely to get “balanced” which will save time in the long run.

So providing that the singular champ for a given month is done right, then in theory there will be more time available for buffs to existing characters (this should also be limited to one per month).

TLDR; my idea is to reduce the number of new champions we get each month down to 1. And then buff 1 older champion on top of that.

    Game development is extremely fast paced and bugs are expected. Slowing down to smell the roses or fix bugs would really hurt the game if not kill it.
  • Kabam has multiple departments that handle different things. The people who work on designing and developing new champions often aren't going to be the same people responsible for bug fixing. As for champion testing and buffing, that's exactly what the CCP beta is for. Cutting back on complicated SQ content could help, since that doesn't get beta tested nearly as much as champion releases (if at all), but cutting down on champion releases wouldn't do much to fix the current state of the game. The frustrating thing about the recent champion releases is that Kabam seems to already know about some bugs via the CCP beta testers but doesn't really talk about them until it becomes a problem. The beta testing isn't the issue there, it's just the transparency.

    It would definitely kill the momentum for new players but I think the long term hardcore players might appreciate a pause in at least new content for a month or 2 to iron everything out. Maybe that’s just me.
    I agree. However, this idea has been brought up for years and has constantly been ignored (like a number of other good reasonable ideas).

    I just want the game to work! So if they need to chill on bringing out 1 or 2 new champs every month for a while then so be it. The game feels overloaded with information about every champs they have now as it is. Then they add new champs along with new content every month.....however the game is broke. Makes tons of sense

    But whatever! What do I know? Let s keep doing what we are doing.....

    You are forgetting one thing: the game still needs to earn Kabam money.

    And since there are no ads and the game is free to play, the only source of those money are microtransactions, mainly for crystals. And slowing down the release would reduce this income significantly

    New champs take something like 8 months to fully design and bring to the game. There are something like 6 or 8 champ designers and they rotate working on new champs. So for example-
    Designers A&B are working on champs to be released in July

    Designers C&D are working on champs to be released in August

    Designers E&F are working on champs to be released in September

    When July champs are done they are working on the next set and so on.

    This is just a rough description of how they rotate. Slowing down content has no bearing on champion design because content designers are different than the champion designers. They have designers for nodes, they have map designers, they have quest designers etc.. Different teams for everything.

    Since designers work on singular champs, there would be no point in trying anything that you said because it already happens.

    The people who create the content aren't the people who are tasked with fixing bugs. Having no content for 2 months won't make bugs be fixed quicker.

    This idea has been brought up multiple times and has been shot down every time, including by Kabam Miike and others from the company. what good is a character animator or an artist who designs the character costumes going to do fixing code if they don't know how to code.

    You're essentially expecting the equivalent of a Navy helmsman to drive a main battle tank in a land war. Or a fighter pilot to steer a warship.

    It'll never happen, especially to the way you would like things done.

    The main reason is because of contracts and expectations on those contracts, especially those from Marvel. They are obligated to release new content monthly and to release new champions, especially if they are tying into any major releases.

    Combine that with the fact that the video game industry is traditionally very fast paced and can't just sit on their laurels for an extended period of time and you have a recipe where they can't never shut down or slow down in an attempt to make things better.
