Rank up gems and gold

Not sure if I'm the only one who thinks this way, but rank up gems are meant to be something to save resources when ranking up champs, but when you do so it costs gold to use, an ever dwindling resource it seems anymore with higher costs for champs of higher rarity. Could we make rank up gems free to use instead of consuming gold?
