Disliking comments

a long time ago, i was told that the "flag" option was for reporting posts. well, what if i don't like or i disagree with a post, but the post is not something that deserves reporting?
simple. add a dislike option. why don't we have one yet? aside from the flag and quote options, we have 5 other options and they're all positive. the only option we have to show our disagreement with something is the flag. we literally have a "Like" option. where's the "Dislike" option?

Probably why there are more flags than needed. No other disagreement options so people just hit flag

It occurred to me that nowadays ppl tends to use FLAG="spam" to show their dislike, although I could be wrong. Perhaps a good idea to have a separate DISLIKE option as you suggested

The Flags are abused often. They're not there to disagree with people or Flag someone we don't like. The Forum is not the same format as Reddit. We don't Downvote thoughts and ideas. The idea in my mind is to encourage respectful debate with words, rather than using metrics. If there was a Dislike, that would be used to negatively impact others the same way. If we don't agree with thoughts someone shares, there's no logical reason to have the ability to negatively impact their Profile. People will disagree, and that's fine. Personally, as someone who has seen their share of the Flags abused, it really has no effect on me. It's just a number on a Profile. It's up to someone else if they want to abuse the Flags, which is against the rules. It's somewhat disappointing that people can't debate in a more mature fashion, but I just chalk that up to Human Nature.

Abusing the system is not a means to getting what people want. There's no logical reason to negatively affect someone's Profile and/or ideas. The metrics are hidden, so it doesn't matter who disagrees. The only purpose it serves is to negatively impact someone. There is no such ability because this is a positive atmosphere. This is not the same as other Forums where popular vote can affect someone's ability to express their views.
Fun fact. Do a Search. Abusing the Flags IS against the rules, and has led to action.

I think people flag quite a bit when someone is just using the forum to feed their own ego and not meaningfully contributing to a discussion.

No it wont, so instead people will have to flag posts from annoying people apparently against forum rules because there is currently no other mechanism to show annoyance at ill informed, passive aggressive or ignorant posts.

Actually they aren't hidden at all Grounded, I click on yours or anybody else's profile and see the full metrics tied to that profile. Calling people Trolls is inappropriate. It's not the atmosphere of this Forum to negatively impact comments. That leads to people misusing it itself. As we have seen by the abuse of Flags. This place is here for respectful discussion. There's a reason there are no negative metrics. We're meant to discuss things in a constructive way. One does not justify the other. Also, I'm aware that the numbers show. I meant the identities of metrics, who clicks what. Meaning there's no real purpose that it serves, other than causing negativity based on how many "Dislikes" people have.

Exactly my point, it is inappropriate but people do it anyways. A dislike or disagree button could help reduce that kind of negative behavior.

If there's a lack of respect in general, it really doesn't matter whether it's name-calling or abusing the metrics. Some do it regardless. It's not a negative space. Whether with comments or metrics. People can't just go around hating on others. Which is why we have Moderators. It won't help the name calling in my opinion. It will just be another outlet for the hating. Eventually people will have to accept that negative and abusive behavior is not appropriate here. In life, really. We all have to deal with people we don't like and be respectful. At school, at work, in the family, in the world in general. If I was dealing with customers or in a business meeting and went off on people calling them trolls or trying to stop them from speaking because I don't like what I say, I'd be fired. That's just a fact of life. We can't do what we want, when we want, and not expect there to be effects.

Actually it proves both our points. I think we both agree it's wrong to call people names, but what I am trying to add is it is also inevitably going to happen on a public forum regardless of what the rules say and how many moderators there are. Humans will be human after all and sometimes people just lose or have no self control.

A disagree/dislike button would reduce the written negativity/personal attacks on the forums and would make the moderators jobs a bit easier in the process. To me that is a positive thing. That said, you will still get the occaisional malicious comments here even if the button was added because like I said some people just cannot help themselves in any public forums especially on the internet.

Despite what some may think, it is possible to disagree without respecting the author and not respecting that opinion does not constitute abuse.

The author may feel that they are entitled to offer their uninformed opinion but no one is required to respect it and conjecture should be challenged and challenge should be encouraged without being labelled as abuse.

Forcing respect is a tool of socialists, earned respect is a good and noble pursuit which is the honorable goal of any developed individual.

What we're discussing is not challenging someone's ideas. It's bully mentality. Abusing Flags and exposing the thoughts of others to cumulative and visible "Dislike" metrics. It's public shaming, no matter how you spin it, and it is not appropriate in a respectful and intelligent conversation. You may personally feel that you can address topics and not respect the source they come from, but we certainly have to conduct ourselves in a way that is respectful, as per the rules. Not respecting the author is not what we are discussing. People can hold whatever feelings they want towards others. What IS abusive is using the Forum to enforce and reinforce those feelings on those we do not respect. That's a fact of life. We're here to discuss the game in a way that is constructive and productive. We're not here to incite negativity. It is not necessary for a civilized debate. Nor is it acceptable. Not here or anywhere else.

I completely agree with you, and when you find this Eutopian society that you are describing, please let me know where it is. Unforunately people have and will always do things deemed as inappropriate, disrepectful or unacceptable. It is part of human nature.

A dislike button is much better alternative to some of the other ways I have seen people express themselves when they disagree or disapprove of something here though. So I still feel it's a good suggestion by the OP.

A Dislike button will only worsen the issue and cause more problems. We have Moderation to deal with abusive behavior. It's not a reason to add to the problem. That's like saying, give us a way to hate on people because we're going to do it anyway.

Actually it's not at all like that, it's more like saying give us a convenient way to constructively and respectfully disagree with people.
