Gladiator not able to heavy cancel?

I was trying out a 3-star Gladiator and discovered that unlike other heavy stun champions, I can't really chain the stun into a special.
His heavy is only one hit, but even if you try to launch your special before that heavy hit occurs, the spacing of his SP1 and SP2 make it so that the defender can block (stun wears off) before any hit of the special lands.
Other heavy stun champions have 2 or more hits in their heavy (like America Chavez, Wasp), where you can let the first hit of the heavy land and then use your special. So in this scenario, the defender is still locked in place from being hit by the heavy.
Other heavy stun champions that have only 1 hit in their heavy (like Doom) have easy access to making their special unblockable.
Gladiator does have unblockable access, but it comes into play after you land your heavy. However, since it only lasts 2 seconds, and the heavy hit to trigger the Unblockable knocks them away, it seems that by the time you dash in -> short combo into heavy stun -> special, you don't really have enough time for the heavy cancel to occur.
Am I missing something here, or is Gladiator's heavy stun essentially just a basic attack?
As a comparison, America gains Zones (like Confidence), but also grants less power to the opponent. There is some strategizing around what you special cancel into as well. Silk gets some strategic benefit as well
Gladiator only gains Confidence.
