Spot as a Defender

I got Spot from my latest 7* crystal. I don't really plan to use him offensively, but he can still be a solid defender - but does he need to be awakened to be a good defender? As a 7* I'm unlikely to dupe him any time soon (He's only my 4th 7* crystal opened)
