Gameplay lag & stuttering

I did some war fights earlier and noticed the game was being a bit weird. Decided to record my fights and captured this.

I’m on what I consider to be a reasonably new device - IPhone 12 mini, latest updates ect…

How are we supposed to play (and more importantly succeed) in competitive gamemodes when the game runs like this?

That is quite a lag. I’d be interested to see what the experts around here think causes that. In my experience, the lags I get are briefer and more sporadic although just as annoying.

    Any thoughts @DNA3000 ?

    It's definitely your phone.
I'm on note10 Pro and never have faced lag of that level.

It’s worth noting that the game was also slowing down when navigating between menus and gamemodes.

Usually it’s quite snappy, but today it just decided to crawl along

That's almost certainly not game lag, but on-device stuttering and pausing. Usually this happens because of some resource contention on the device, although it can also sometimes happen on iOS devices when they receive notifications.

I would recommend two things to try to reduce or eliminate this from happening. First, when you're playing important fights pause notifications or set your phone to do not disturb. Second, restart the game client before starting a sequence of important fights. This means force closing completely and then starting back up again. I have found that when I do not do this for a very long time, I just play, then switch away and do something else, put the phone down, whatever, and then go back into the game hours or a day later, and I never force close, the game often gets wonky after a while.

This is especially true if you are recording fights. When I record fights, and they are important fights, I restart more often. Screen recording and finalizing recordings takes a lot of CPU and memory resources relatively speaking and can compete with the running of the game itself.

If doing all this still doesn't make that kind of problem go away, I would also check to see if your phone is overheating and going into thermal throttling. My own iPhone 12 used to have thermal throttling issues off and on, especially after iOS major upgrades or sometimes game client upgrades.

Oh yeah, and by the way I have sometimes found that after iOS upgrades my phone sometimes acts weird, like it is burning way more CPU and memory resources than normal, not just in MCOC but just in general. When that happens I turn my phone completely off and restart it. This often makes that go away after an hour or two.

I usually have do not disturb turned on while playing to stop notifications

The game had been running for about an hour, so maybe that was the issue

As for screen recording, that’s the only way I can gather evidence of these issues. Is the solution also the problem in this situation?

It can be, but as you say it’s also the only way to document issues. You just want to be more careful when recording on older phones. It’s perfectly fine in general, but it can exacerbate preexisting problems. Periodically restarting makes recording pretty safe, unless your phone is overheating. Screen recording while playing can make overheating problems much worse. But if the problem is overheating, you should notice your phone getting noticeably hot. Unless it’s in a very bulky case, in which case I would suggest playing caseless for a while and see if it either gets better or you notice the phone getting uncomfortably hot before gameplay goes bad.

I probably just need to restart more often. My phone wasn’t overheating so that’s not the issue

It is quite annoying though that I can’t play the game for more than an hour at a time

Clear your cache frequently, it helps a lot

The game starts lagging a bit when you play too much in one session, restarting every so often helps

My *not a game developer* opinion on this is that it seems like some kind of memory leak / garbage collection issue.

The game did actually have a memory leak issue at one point and I promise you this is not what happened lol
