Question about Vox prefight

Has anyone found it to be actually useful? You're effectively rooting yourself (at least in one direction), which in my experience, makes it a bit tougher to consistently Dex attacks at such a close range. Is there something I'm missing? Or is it supposed to be high risk high reward, since you can quickly stack precision buffs?
