That’s not entirely unexpected, because solo milestone rewards are not progression sensitive. So 6* 7* and titan shards are extremely good rewards for lower progression players.
For reference every other season or so I take a low alt and do one match, to try to get near the bottom of the solo leaderboard to try to judge participation. This season 1125 points landed 225398 on the solo leaderboard. So more than that many players played at least one match. Another alt scored 4875 points and ended up 197207 after five matches. While this shows many players doing just a few matches, this also extrapolates to a hundred thousand players doing a significant number of matches.
I scored just over 300k and placed 45,785 in the solo event on my main. Almost 46 thousand players scored more points than me, and I maxed out the milestones. If they are the top 1%, then the game has five million players. Realistically, the game has between 500k and one million players, which means 25% to 50% of all active players do at least one BG match, and five to ten percent of all active players did enough matches this season to max out the solo milestones. I also placed 12205 in GC with a final rating of I think 32, which means significantly more players than that managed to climb into GC. The night before the season ended I saw 21300 players on the GC leaderboards. That’s 2% to 4% of the player base not just playing at all, but climbing into the Gladiator Circuit, which is intended to be something only the top few percent can consistently reach.
So over 20k players are pushing into GC, about 50k players are pushing to complete all the solo milestones, and about 250k players are at least trying out the mode. While BG is not a perfect game mode, that does not sound like a game mode that is “dead except for the 1%.” The top 1% is between 5000 and 10000 players. They don’t even comprise the majority of the players in GC, much less the majority of players actively playing the game mode.
Of course, that’s this season, where the milestones are boosted. What about last season, when everyone was saying the mode looked completely dead? By my estimates, at least 15k players made it to GC, and well over 150k were participating (I don’t have an exact figure, because none of my alts scored super low points). One of my alts scored about 136k points and placed about 58000, and the other scored 29k points and placed about 131k. This implies lower participation, but nowhere near as dead as some people thought. People were playing fewer matches, and fewer players were playing at all, but overall participation was, based on those numbers, down a little in terms of numbers of players and somewhat more in terms of overall matches. Lower, but not dead.
Mostly participation shifted towards the end of the season. So the numbers looked bad for most of the season and then caught up mostly by the end, to land down, but not as far down as some were assuming.
Anyone who thinks the mode is dead or dying is quantitatively wrong. Anyone who thinks the mode is mostly for the top 1% and players below that aren’t bothering are also provably wrong. The vast majority of players participating are not the 1%. They are probably not even the top 10%. They might be the top 50%, maybe. When my alts play, they see normal players with normal rosters most of the time drafting and playing like normal players and not top tier players slumming in lower alts at lower VT tiers.
It's just annoying how everyone says things like "you've got no excuse to have Valiant" or "after act 8 it's literally easy to do" blah blah blah
It can seem daunting, and it isn't the sort of thing most players want to do over and over again, but I think many players who think they don't have the time or stamina to do a completion run could do it if they paced themselves out over a very reasonable number of days.
Anywayyyyyyy .... I sound like a child moaning at this point. Kinda deviated away from why I even posted on this thread lol
