The only way to not use one if you select it is to cancel out of the matchmaking. Otherwise, you have the shield for that match. They need to add the ability to toggle on and off.

At this point, I think that would actually be a good idea. You would still have to win to progress further and eventually get into the GC. But less advanced players would feel less stressed about playing the mode, and would actually have a chance.
The GC should be where the real competitiveness comes into play.
