    Without being rude, think of it and Indian Halloween. Kind of similar to Day of the Dead in Mexico.

    Well it's said that on this day lord Ram returned to his kingdom after defeating Ravan and ending his exlie and in celebration everyone in the kingdom lit deeps/divas(hence the name Deepawali) it signfies the victory of good against evil and hence is one of the major festivals in india
