Well it's said that on this day lord Ram returned to his kingdom after defeating Ravan and ending his exlie and in celebration everyone in the kingdom lit deeps/divas(hence the name Deepawali) it signfies the victory of good against evil and hence is one of the major festivals in india

Shubh Diwali to all those celebrating. Learned this morning that's the correct way of wishing, not Happy Diwali. Although I don't think anyone minds but I am sure "Shubh" is more appreciated. Also learned a fun fact last night from a Hindu neighbour that Diwali is also the Hindu New Year in addition to what @BEA5T_FURY said above.
