Please define "Whale", thanks!

In thread after thread people have complained about the Realm Event milestone rewards, and specifically about the crystals added to them because "only whales can reach them".

I'm just curious what people think makes one a whale. More specifically, how much spending in the Banquet event alone would make one a whale, thus opening up the top milestones?

I'm not asking for the math. I'm asking what is in peoples' minds when they talk about whales and Realm Event milestones.

This dude spent like $120,000 for 2 r4’s

And as for whales I seen people spend $1000 on these crystals all the way to $5,000+ on youtube openings

Cool, now we're getting somewhere. I'm pretty sure 99.9999% of the community would agree that $120K spent is absolutely whaling out.

$1k to $5k. Sure, probably whale like behavior to most people, although probably not all that uncommon either.

How low can we go and still be considered a whale? $500? $250? $100?

I'm trying to find the line between whale and non-whale to see if the top milestones are, in fact, only reachable by whales.

I wouldn’t even have the right to words for that’s because that’s more the whaling.

It's perfectly possible to reach the Isophyne dupe in the Realm event without spending on the game. Aside from paying for that "get 20 units per day" daily card, I've been f2p for about 10 months in the game. I think that makes me the tiniest little fish in a fishbowl that's about a hundred miles from the ocean where the blubberiest whales roam. So no, it's not just whales that the last milestones.

The way I see it is, it's only whales who try and go for the top ranked rewards. It would never even enter my mind to do that myself. Heck, even when I was actually spending on the game like a good little baby dolphin, it still would never have entered my mind to care about the ranked rewards. Those are just legitimately unobtainable by non-spenders (and honestly, even most spenders).

Best and most sensible response to the subject. A rarified find in the forums.

Thank you. This is the point I was hoping to get around to in this thread. I just got so tired of all the "It's not fair, it's only for whales!!!" nonsense.

    Anything above 0$ imo, seriously

This, on the other hand, is ridiculous.

If you don't want to spend on the game, don't. It's your money, your choice. But to say spending literally any amount on the game makes you a whale is simply unreasonable and undermines any other argument you might make on this subject. Unfortunately, it seems to be a widely held opinion, and the source of much of the animosity between spenders and non-spenders.

Sadly, it's an issue that goes way beyond anything to do with MCOC. Everything is black and white, perfect or trash. Nuance has become a dirty word.

I look at the term pretty broadly because I've heard it used in a wide range of projects, not all of which were games.... A true "whale" to me is basically anyone that can/does spend significantly more money on any one project than the average customer would be willing or able to spend.

I won't put a dollar value on it, but I imagine you get what I'm saying.

I mean, World of Warcraft players spend $180 a year for access to the game... If someone drops a few hundred bucks a year on MCOC, I'd hardly consider them a whale.

Yeah, I can agree with that. One of the reasons why I was able to sink down more money on the game a couple of years ago was that more of my overall "hobby spending budget" went there. For a long while, MCOC was basically the only game I played so naturally I had more money to spend on it. Then I bought a gaming PC and returned to my PC gaming roots. Now that I am picking up games to play there every now and again, there's not nearly enough left for me to spend on MCOC.

So to me, there are roughly three categories: people who don't spend at all/very little, which is where I'd say I am today; people who kind of zero in on the game and spend their whole "hobby stuff" budget on it, which is where I was before; and those who spend far more on the game than I've ever done, and those guys are who I consider whales.

If you wanna get technical there’s people like me who spend on big deals.

Like 4th of July. It used to be just $300 3 odins saving up for that day years ago.

They increased is to limit 4x on odins.

Then proceeded to have webstore deals
(4odins with better deals + webstore deal)

But nowdays there’s milestones during the 4th July
Deals that go to $500,700,800 on the webstore.

So basically you spending anywhere from hundreds to almost $1,000 basically whales. To get best deals in the game for the sales.

I got all the odins in this Christmas sale. So that’s $400 in the webstore + $50 webstore deal.

People will call me a whale for that because they don’t spend or don’t drop $100’s in the game but technically it’s best deal you can get in th game in 4th July, cyber or Christmas unit deals

Thats like small whale but whaling out when there are deals.

There are people who buy early access deals or just buy idins with no bonuses that will spend just to get the 7* champion .

Look up damn epic whale on mcoc.

If he wants a 7* he would just buy odins to pull the champions even..after buying all early access deals.

I’m close to having enough r3 champions and I’m a casual spender. Not exactly an accurate definition

A whale especially for mobile games or games in general is someone who spends because an offer exists. Is the offer worth it or not they don't care, they will spend because it exists.

For those who remember when 6 star r3 came out and the only way to get the t5cc was abyss and offers and the offers were terrible.

Now that's the most largest kind of whale but there are many other versions who spend frequently that would classify them also as whales

Great point, but if you still buy unit offers would that still classify you as free to play. It feels like a misnomer for ftp to become such a huge category

That the same I do buy deal when it makes the most sense to me not just odin to get units or narmor I did buy that deal ones because of the bonus one 4 July to get enough units for 36k
