Game's future

Hi everyone, how’s it going?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the future of the game and how quickly it’s evolving. I heard that some players already have 7-star champions at rank 4, and we’re getting closer to fully maxing out the power of the highest rarity characters.

That got me wondering, what happens when we reach that point? Instead of introducing 8-star champions and repeating the same cycle, I thought it would be interesting to have a new rarity. This new rarity could require owning all previous versions of the champion, with each of them fully maxed out, in order to ascend them to a sort of ‘ultimate form.’ On top of that, it could adapt to the maximum power level of the required rarity for specific content.

What do you think about this idea? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

If you want my honest opinion, I hate the idea. Three reasons:

First, there's this very weird notion among many players that rarities are unique little snowflakes, and the next rarity after seven doesn't have to be eight, it could be something else or nothing else. This is a weird notion. The question is not whether eight should come after seven, the question is why should we spend any time at all thinking about whether eight comes after seven.

Eight star rarity can introduce new features, it can function in different ways, those champs can have unique abilities owing to their rarity. Five star champs have new mechanics, six star champs scale differently, seven star champs introduce an entirely new customization feature. Whatever eight star rarity is, it will likely do the same. Given what the actual requirements are for introducing a new rarity in the first place, there's no reason to introduce confusion by naming it anything other than the next number after seven.

Second, forcing players to max out all of the lower rarities to unlock a higher roster progression is a huge burden on newer players. This game is currently very approachable to new players even though it is a ten year game. Long terms veteran players like myself have all the lower champs and have had years to slowly rank and level them up. New players would find that task extremely burdensome, and offer veterans an almost insurmountable progression advantage. Making the game that hostile to new players would be extremely detrimental to the long term health of the game.

And third, this ignores the reason why new rarities are even introduced in the first place. It is not, as most players might think, because we just "run out of stuff to do" with the previous rarity. It is actually related to that, but more important than that. This game supports itself by monetizing the chase. Everyone gets everything eventually, so the only reason to spend is not to get anything, it is to get things faster. For anything in this game to be worth chasing it has to be new, something no one else has, something worth spending money on. Yes, when we run out of ranks in 7* champs we will need another rarity, but even if we didn't run out of ranks we would need a new rarity when enough players have enough champs in the highest rarity that the incentive to chase more of them starts to drop significantly. Thing thing most people hate about introducing new rarities - that you have to start over from scratch building up your roster - is not a bug, it is a feature. This reset is why new rarities are introduced in the first place. Any attempt to replace the next rarity with a new system that *doesn't* require that reset is missing the point.

So, just being honest here, I don't like it because a) it is oddly unnecessary, b) it is bad for the game in general and newer players in particular, and c) it will never happen because it would not accomplish what new rarities are designed to accomplish in the first place.

I think the next rarity should be called Champion 360. And the one after that should be called Champion One. And the one after that should be called Champion Series S.

You know, just to make sure nobody can keep them straight or remember which one is newer. That's the ticket.

Once upon a time, Apple sold two main line Macs: the Mac II and the Mac SE. When they decided to move from 68020 to 68030 processors, the Mac II became the Mac IIx. Everyone's disappointment was immeasurable and their day was ruined when the Mac SE relaunched a few months later as the Mac SE/30.
