How do I activate buffs in battlegrounds, because I can’t seem to beat my opponents without this massive disadvantage.

What do you mean by "activate buffs"? There's really nothing special to do. Read the nodes and use your champs according to their kits.

How does activating buff help you in battlegrounds. Did I miss something with the current nodes that will help attackers more with buffs?

I’m going to try and mind read and guess you mean pre fight ability. Wait until the preview for the fight screen shows up and don’t spam the continue to fight button. You can set it where your champion is pictured on the left.
