So if i am reading this right every time you complete a mission you gain role force which then should grant you grit passive but this seems to trigger at random with no real logic

When you complete a mission you gain role charges, not role force. Once you build up enough charges (50 I think?), they convert into a role force, which then triggers the grit passive. So it requires completing a few missions to actually trigger the grit, not every time you complete a single mission.

Under "Raids - Role Force", it clearly states, 'When a mission is completed, gain a Role Force passive."

Role force passive is the number of passive charge, you need to hit 50 of those to get the grit buff and vigilance in case of nightmare.
Number of role force passive gained increases with the role boost of your attacker.
