“First Appearance” champs: What is the point?

Hey all!

The idea of first appearance champs could be cool and worth it but I’m not sure if I understand what they are right now. Is it just a shiny profile pic and that’s it? I thought there might be a little more to it like an in game cosmetic change. It would have been cool if “first appearance” champs had slightly altered character models. I’ve attached images of the current in game model and the other options that could have been done for the “first appearance” version.

Kabam sells "slightly altered" models as full heroes for full tag.

No need to shift that money into cosmetic

The change is purely for whales. Hopefully they expand the cosmetics system and introduce a prestige system so that F2P can get different champ borders too.

Not everything needs to be F2P. This is a way for Kabam to earn some revenue without making the gap between f2p/low spenders and whales a huge problem. It’s totally fine. Better this than selling champs for 1000$.

Womp womp buddy. Plenty of other games have achievement based cosmetics that don't cost anything in addition to the regular shop cosmetics. You never heard about dark matter camo?

i find the cosmetic thing to be pretty insipid. im f2p but can't imagine spending money to procure a shiny gossamer over a champion's profile picture. however, this isn't the worst form of monetization since it doesn't actually change anything relating to the power dynamics present in-game. it's a purely aesthetic move.

I think we look at everything that Kabam does with a microscopic pessimistic viewpoint.

It's a welcome change and helps people who enjoy the game and everything that comes with it.

Asking for models is a fair ask but this is a good starting point. I'm no Kabam Knight by any means but this was very well put forward by Crashed. Credit given where credit is due.

Sell stronger champs and rankups which increases the gap btw f2p and p2p: Riot.

Sell cosmetics which will not effect a single f2p, might help decrease the power creep among spenders and f2p: Riot.

if Kabam can stop champ acquisition though these horrible sales by replacing them with selling cosmetic changes to champs, I’m absolutely all for that. Let the whales have slightly cooler looking champs if it means we get to play with 7* doom/hulkilng/ghost etc

I am totally supporting paid cosmetics including skins. From my pov its the best possible monetization option for f2p games. As long as its only cosmetics and dont add some additional attributes even small ones. Also those should be in line with the overall game design. Will hate to see some Beach Boy Doom in the game.

Lmao. FTP and low spenders constantly whine about the gap between FTP/Low spenders and whales l, then whine because you can now buy some cool cosmetic upgrades that don't make the gap wider than it already is.

Skins customizing would be more actual and fun just as Marvel Rivals or Marvel Strike Force are offering. It could absolutely be moneterize as a whale nice to have and a not neccessary thing for f2p.

I see candidates like The Gardians having their blue suits and badges or Groot having is GoG3 form. F4 team having those MCU retro versions. Spidernan having skins instead of some other version like Iron Spider (tech) and Future Foundation white suit (cosmic).

Alternative versions of hero like the What If…T'Challa Star Lord?

Maybe they can't go as far as that in terms or efforts versus $$ gain but... yeah makes more sense for me than holographics.

The first editions are essentially a beta test as crashed described. A first trial run. They have plans to expand the concept of cosmetics in mcoc if this does well so I dont think the idea of recolors is off the table in the future provided cosmetics actually work out

This is the first step towards what could be champion skins or more visual customisation options. They're testing the waters instead of dropping a huge new thing into the game all at once that may not even have much if an impact

Not if you have to grind for them. Crashed already said they are looking at introducing achievement based cosmetics so all the clowns hating on F2P players will have to cope anyway.

It's something to chase. I would think the portion of the crowd that says "What about F2P?" would be happy that the shiny ones aren't any more powerful.

If this is a way to for Kabam to make money, that I don’t doesn’t impact on my account I’m all for it.

I’d much rather this be paid for then put 7* Dr Doom behind a pay wall.

That's a stupid comparison. Getting every 2* has a use; even if it's in the limited time special arenas, they're still useable champions that expand your roster. If cosmetics don't do anything to alter your champions PI, attack, health or anything, people are entirely right to ask, 'what's the point?'

Many people play because of the collection aspect. Whether it's taking your Account into the next phase or not, some people like to collect things.

I like the skin idea as long as it doesn’t block new champs from coming out ( like in rivals they have green goblin but no unique red goblin unless you buy the skin ). Also when I first heard of think instantly thought about Pokemon and shinnies what if we had something like that?

I could give a toss about titles or profile pics. the ONLY reason emotes partially matter to me is actually using them for communication.

BUT. I’m slowly rounding out my 2* roster. maxing all my 5*. and it’s vanity. it makes me happy to have this collection. I’ve got a completionist thing. and anyone could have their own “thing” that really don’t matter outside of pride, public of private. 100%, my push is in line with someone chasing these skins, absolutely.

and SOMEBODY IS gonna want these skins. if it is a revenue driver for Kabam without skewing our playing field, even better. but, like so many of the announcements, “we’ll see”…
