What was the last great “champion chase” for you?
Recently I’ve felt like my champion “chases” have been pretty meh compared to the days of old. I mean sure I’m excited to pull champs I want, scorpion was evading me in banquet for one, so that turned into a mini chase, some of the titan champs I really wanted as well, but I feel like with how many champs in the game there are now, and the 2025 model for releasing champions, I’ve felt like we haven’t had a great champ chase in a long time.
I mean this problem is twofold for me. Firstly getting champs these days is so much easier than it used to be. If you didn’t get them out of a cav crystal or the likes you had time in the featured to get them and then you’d have to try for the basics for ages. With the titan crystals and the sheer number of shards/nexuses we get for them missing out on a champ you really want is quite hard, even for non-whale or f2p summoners. Now I’m not going to complain about this part at all, because really it is a good thing that champs are easier to get.
The second, and bigger problem in my opinion is the model with which champs are released these days. It used to be that you’d have some defensive champs, and offensive champs that would counter them, but the offensive champs would be good in a lot of places, have high utility and high damage which made them great for a broad number of matchups. New champ releases follow the same boring and hated formula of
- 5/5 defender comes out and everyone HAS to get them
- attacker comes out who hard counters them and honestly little else
- Repeat
This turns champion chases from “this champion will be a cornerstone of my roster and I’ll use them everywhere” to “I need to get this champ so that I can win battlegrounds games or else I may as well sit out the season”. Some people might defend this and I’ll admit I have been a bit reductionist but the vast majority of summoners have by now identified this loop and detest it.
The release of deathless champs, and now stellar forged champs is a nice way to give us a chase. The chase for deathless thanos was really cool and worth it afterwards, giving us a great dual threat champ who can be used both ways in BGs and also in loads and loads of content outside of that. Aside from this I would say the last great chase champ was Serpent for me. At that point in the game titans were still rare and valuable (at least for non-whales), serpent was a valuable attacker and a defensive threat, and since I have used him in so much content (I mean he on his own did more than half of act 9 for me so far)
Everyone remembers the good old Aegon chases, Blade, Sparky, Corvus, Ghost, the old legends of the contest back when getting new meta champs was hard, and felt worth it, so my question to you guys is when was your last great chase, how long did they evade you and do you miss it?
