Open Letter About Why Side Events Suck & How To Fix Them
I have a newly formed theory about why the side events suck. I’m not claiming this is original thought. I haven’t done any searches to see if other people have posted this. But I thought I’d put it out here on the forums and see what people think. I hope that Kabam reads it and acts, but I don’t expect them to.
I would argue that Marvel Contest of Champions is primarily a game of skill, strategy, and luck. Skill in that one must learn to fight with the champions that one has in their deck. Strategy in that one must select the appropriate champions given the challenge. Luck in that one must draw the champions needed. I would argue if we could break this down skill represents 65% of the game, strategy represents 25% of the game and lock represents the remaining 10%.
Now let’s compare this with the side events.
The recent arcade event did nothing to improve skill (teach you how to fight with your champions). It required no strategy. It required no luck.
The Colosseum event did require strategy (you need to select the appropriate champion) and skill (you need to be good with that champion) and luck (you need to have the appropriate champion). However, it was far more dependent on strategy and luck than skill. I would argue it’s 70% luck and 25% strategy and 5% skill. But these are subjective measures. Simply my opinion.
Let’s look at the clash event. Clash was 100% luck. The fights are ridiculously easy. There’s no skill required. There’s no strategy. That’s why it feels like a grind.
So how could Kabam fix this?
Events should lead people to improve skill, strategy, or luck. Event should teach you how to fight better. Events could teach players to think more strategically. Or events could highlight the strategic advantage of infrequently used champions. You really can’t teach luck. But someone might have an idea about that too.
Anyway, if you find any value in this post like it, comment, or whatever, maybe with enough activity Kabam have will read it and be thoughtful about future events. I hope but I’m also a realist and not hopeful. Thanks for reading.
