Masteries changing in the middle of AQ

I started AQ last night and then changed my masteries this morning. The change carried over to AQ, I’ve never noticed a change before. Has this always been the case?

any changes made to masteries or rank and level of a champion change right away in aq, in aw they dont change until the next war

Pretty much. Mastery changes affect your attackers immediately. It's only for war defense that they are locked in when you set defenders.
