For new players, save ALL of your units for the first month or two. Spend them on limber (1) then Parry (max) and stupify, etc. Then practice dexterity and parrying and this will help your gameplay get better which will bring more units then. Then focus on attack/health
Until you get a decent amount of units to start unlocking masteries, this is a good guide to read that gives in-depth info on each mastery and what it's useful for.
Have 3 bars of Mystic Dispersion, 1 bar of Dexterity, 3 bars of Parry, 5 bars of Precision, 5 bars of Cruelty, 2 bars of Energy Resistance, Max out Stand Your Ground, Max out both the Regeneration Masteries, and if you have more units unlock Suicide Masteries such as Deep Wounds, 1 bar of despair and so on......

1 Limber, 1 Dexterity, 3 Parry, 3 Stupefy are paramount before anything else.
After that, it's a choice between heavy offense, heavy defense, or a balanced build, and your own preferences and play style will determine what is best for you.
