When is the rift portal destination determined?

Is it set once you enter the rift, or at the time you click the button to teleport? It would be nice to know because when I get a **** reward I always wonder if it would have been different if I did it a second later or earlier....

    Why does it matter? Dwelling on could have beens is useless.
