Largely because of specific classification and node interaction. Direct damage and energy damage are specific code variants. So for nodes they behave in specific ways. Modok isn’t an energy damage champ nor is his sp1 or heavy coded as energy damage (my belief and I’m willing to be wrong). So I’m asking, is incinerate and his sp1 considered “energy” damage which, I guess most specifically, could be enhanced by an energy boost node.
Plus it’s a bet so, an answer must be had.

I see your point. However, a good idea is to always look at older champions abilities. Under Phoenix, Incinerate is listed as Energy Damage.

As far as direct damage MODOK lacks any such thing.

MODOK’s Sp1 however seems to correspond with energy however I have not tested this but it’s almsot a certainty.

A good rul of thumb for testing if a special attack is energy or not is to fight a max 5* Ultron (duplicated of course) and attack. If Ultron gains health than its an energy attack

Or you could do the same for Ms/Captain Marvel. You’d have to launch the Special from a combo against her block to test but when an energy attack is blocked by either of them (both require duplication) “absorption” will flash on their side and they’ll get a power meter increase

In fairness bishop gained a prowess, Ultron did absorb but cm didn’t (all duped, two duels |ultron and Bishop| rol CM. So I’m not saying it can’t be treated as energy in certain circumstances but incinerate isn’t coded as energy as CB would trigger the the same thing. Plus node iteraction is specific as well. I actually don’t discount it can for certain champs, I’m just curious an official ruling because it seems to but only in certain instances.

Jane Foster can be a test for Incinerate

Her energy resistance allows her to effect not just direct attacks but I’ve seen her able to reduce Aura of Incineration before so it’s worth a shot

I’ll go find one. It’s a smidgen harder to find a useful lady thor but, I’ll look. It would be cool if we could duel or own roster as looking for ranked champs of the less prized or prestigious is a task but in the name of a bet .. I’ve probably done worse
