I haven't really done much as far as online forums. Looking for some advice for learning the ropes around here! Any advice appreciated!

Another tip:

Since you created a forum account with your alt account, make sure you do not create a forum account for your main and post on that too. People have been banned on the forums for that, you are not allowed to post from multiple forum accounts.

1. Read before you write. If you're someone that wants to talk, but doesn't want to listen, your time on the forums will likely be less pleasant. See what other people have to say, think about it, and then express your own thoughts taking into account what you've seen. You want people to pay attention to and value what you say, show you care what other people say.

2. Try not to take things personally. Tone and intent don't travel well on written word forums, so lots of things that seem harsh to you probably weren't intended that way. But also, some of it probably was intended that way, and you have to be able to let it slide. No one can do this perfectly, not even I, but do as I say, not as I sometimes do. Whenever this seems difficult to do, ask yourself this question. Imagine you post a new thread on the forums. What would you find to be the worse outcome. One: a hundred people post that you're wrong. Two: no one replies at all. Being ignored is worse than being contradicted. Remember that when someone attacks you.

3. The forums are a community, such as it is, and all communities have a culture. That means it has idiosyncrasies, it has its memes, it has its personalities, it has its unofficial unwritten rules. You will run into them randomly, and when you do you will sometimes find them to be a live wire that shocks you. Try to take it in stride, and not a challenge to overcome. As Blade says, someone is always trying to ice-skate uphill. Don't be that guy.
