Prof X, drug dealing mechanics

Okay, so I get the basis of Professor X and his synergies seem legit, but how does the icon work when playing the other champs? For example:

There is a drug/synergy specific to Emma, but what do the numbers do? I notice that they decrease when I take damage, but why and what does that effect? I know I’m new to Prof X, but I feel like it doesn’t describe this in any of his champion info or synergy guide.

It's kinda similar to the force field of Invisible Woman.
It reduces incoming damage by 75%, until it reaches 0.
