How to unlock champions in quest?

I have 5 of my best champions locked in a quest.
Couple days ago I was in a quest that did not finish. Then I could not log in for 2 days because of the stupid update forced upon us (no WiFi available).
And after the last update I find my champions locked is a quest that is not active anymore!! The quest expired. And when I get to start a new one those champions are not available to select for a team (a red icon/flag like on top left said "In Quest" .... Should be nice if it was a link to the quest in question so I can complete it)
How to get them back to be available for a new quest? Unlocked?
This is new. And very annoying...
Bug in the software?

I have run into that before....but it was usually fixed by shutting down the game completely (not just exiting) and opening the game up again.

Closed the app, clean cash and reboot....
