What is ascension?

I don't use twitch so I couldn't watch the stream and I can't find any relevant info on it either so can someone explain what is ascension to me? Thanks!

Gold and tier 1 primordial dust for 4 and 5 stars, gold and tier 2 for 6 stars. We will get enough free tier 1 dust to ascend a 5 star when ascension goes live and we will be able to get enough tier 2 dust to ascend a 6 star via an event in September i think. Other ways to get the dust are coming soon after i think they said
