It does bring you back. I just had it happen.

Game crashed 1st fight and when I got back in it auto selected aa as my defence. I rallied back though because at least I got to choose my attacker to give me a chance.

Out of order edit as aa was my second fight

I've had that happen to me as well and it has a tendency to entirely screw you out of a win. Cool that you managed to claw it back.
