I'm pretty sure it was more recent that variant 4. I think it was 1/2 * crystal combo until like a year ago, but I've been wrong before (and quite often).

Yes i think you're right. I vaguely remember people being absolutely pissed that Kabam did that when they really needed 1* hulk for the last quest

The Hero crystal (80% 2*, 20% 1*) was introduced shortly after variant 4, then it was replaced shortly after that by the 1* crystal after the complaints about it being 80% 2*.
