I’ve been having the exact same problem for the past three wars, so just leaving a comment here

Maybe leader change you in battle groups on enlistment alliance war . You can join only previous group. Try another group to join...

If any of those champions are in a quest, then you can't join war attack with them. If you leave/finish the quest, join attack, then you can use them in a quest again.
