I think it's a matter of perspective. A lot of the more active people on the forum will have a lot of game experience and progression, for them it wouldn't be worthwhile. If you're on a new account and have a few dollars spare, then the results of those crystals could be useful to you, but bear in mind crystals like that are always a gamble, and the odds are on show to let you make an educated decision. You do progress very quickly past 3-5 star champs nowadays, but the right 5 stars can help you well into act 7 - I actually used a 5 star in an act 8 quest today.
