No the game functions pretty well in china. If it's available in chinese version of playstore or whatever, and can be downloaded without any vpn, then you can play the game without any restrictions
Can I not use my current version of the game? Do I have to download mcoc in China then log into my account?
And would that ban my acct if they see it being logged in somewhere else?
Just needs to have been downloaded via an actual Android (or Apple) App Store ( not a knockoff HuaWei or etc App Store).
Govt may have different restrictions on time allowed online for games, etc, depending on your age. (which means your device may have to somehow have provided proof of age ?) And that is maybe why VPN's are used by some, to avoid it registering as being played n certain regions.
Game may be able to detect being “logged in” from different locations, but plenty of ppl using VPN regularly without triggering ban (so long as it really is from your device, by you, etc, that is logging in and playing)
MCOC was available but not anymore in AppStore China, those people downloaded can still play it, but no new players. A big loss for Kabam, there are many very good players and big spenders.
Wouldn't their censorship affect the fact that Wiccan and Hulkling are gay or am I just being racist? Like, I imagine that Kabam will remove any mention of it to appeal to the Chinese market or the Chinese government will not allow it.

You are being racist, AFAIK, the game was online in China for years (with Herc and Hulking released), even today there are still over ten thousand players, it was removed from AppStore only for a couple of years, the rumor said because Kabam didn’t refresh local license.

There are countries that have death penalty for homosexuality and even those countries don't have any censorship for mcoc.

Sorry to necro a thread but I was also curious about this. @KabamDORK@KabamPinwheel is it true that you can use a VPN for situations like this without getting banned? Similarly, if we downloaded the app in North America and are in China when a new patch is released, will we be able to download the new version, either with or without a VPN? Many thanks!

Kabam cannot advise you on violating the laws or regulations of the country or principality you happen to live in. However, what I can say is that where ever you are, the use of a VPN is not prohibited by Kabam, and both players and developers often use them when travelling or for other reasons. However, the VPN will not alter the rules of the app stores you download an app from. If your particular region blocks that app store, whether you use a VPN or not if you connect to the same app store you will face the same restrictions. But let's say you were to move from one country to another; say from Spain to Italy. You might want to switch to using the Italian version of the Apple App store or the Google Play store due to language and currency changes. In that case, you would need to go through those app stores procedures to reregister yourself to make your new country your "home" country for the purposes of downloads, updates, and purchases.
People do this sort of thing all the time when they want to participate in app betas that are region limited. The beta might only be available in Australia, say, and to see it they have to change their app store settings so as to assert they are Australian for the purpose of downloads and purchases. It is not exactly kosher, but it happens all the time.
None of this should be construed as an endorsement of using a VPN to circumvent local restrictions on where you are legally allowed to go, or to bypass limitations of the app store you are currently registered to use. I'm simply providing information on how these systems work, and what Kabam's general policies are with regard to using them when done in a legal manner. Also, I am not an employee or official spokesperson for Kabam, and nothing I say should be treated as coming from Kabam or stating an officially sanctioned position of Kabam itself. This is just my own observations of prior history and technical knowledge.
