like the crystal cleaning thing i think they've sorely overestimated here. BGs is cool but it's not join the grinders and buy all kinds of elders marks cool. you have an incredibly low amount of points for a win to matter unless you're talking about a LARGE LARGE amount of the base winning more than they lose and that's not likely.
and normal summoners won't spend to get the most (albeit too low) with elders marks.
You don’t need to buy EMs at all man, you’re getting them from each VT rank + the milestones themselves give them, just use those
How much data do you need before we get the initial report?
I’ll probably do weekly posts as with Crystal Cleanse, but as I write this we are just under 86 hours in and at about 100m points. The pace car for 1b would be at about 128m at this point in time, so we are currently under the pace.
The big difference between Crystal Cleanse and BG Blitz is that Crystal cleanse started with a huge burst of Crystal openings and then dropped off a lot in the first week, whereas there’s less of that going on in Blitz. We’ll need to see how activity trends over time. Unlike with crystals, scoring activity has a better chance of staying level or even go up over time.
I think we'll get more points in coming days because many whales will start battling GC
Part of what’s wrong with this event and the community’s engagement with it is that OP has written a dissertation that has 1100 views for an event that will require 100,000 people to reach peak milestones to have any chance at the good prizes.
It’s hard for us to conceptualize the scope of the playerbase.
It's worse than that: even when you wrote this, it hadn't been viewed by 1000 players.
It had been viewed 1000 times.
333 players checking in three times would be more like it. Most people come back to view other responses, after all...
As you say: we often don't realise what a small part of the playerbase we are, on here...

I think an even bigger factor is many players only play lightly if at all until deeper into the season when VT sorts out strength more.

Exactly. Approximately 15-20% of players reach GC. Let's assume 75% of them actually go a long way. That's around 5% of the player base, so around 50k odd players. You get 584 points for playing 4 GC matches, irrespective of wins or losses. I have a feeling we'll see the numbers rise mid-season, like around 14 days in. The end of season might see a little spike as well, when streamers do their last "BG stresm" marathon.
The biggest problem with this event in regards to players actually participating in BGs is that the solo ranked rewards are in direct conflict with the alliance rewards. Unlike Road to the Crypt where we worked together, the ranked rewards for Solo are leading to the early ranks of GC being farm territory (which is due to the change they made of giving more points in GC than VT). Players will make it out of the VT only to struggle to win matches in GC from the "tryhard alliances" farming points in there.
I'm going to have to tank a bunch of vt matches with elders marks before I can claim the stash to stay under the cap.
So what I'll do is play rd1 properly and see what the other guy does, if it looks like they tried I'll give them the win. Probably have to do 10 or so.

I don’t think that’s a major factor. Remember that the overall win percentage of the player base as a whole is always 50%. Someone has to lose for every player that wins. That’s true everywhere: even in GC, the win percentage is 50%.
Different players have different win percentages but to estimate how many points the player base is earning total, it’s safe to assume everyone is winning exactly 50% of their matches.
The more players that make it into GC, the more points we’re going to score, no matter what players are doing in GC, whether they are competing or farming, as long as they continue to play at all.

And if those that make it into GC struggle to get many wins from the shear amount of the mysterium and higher players farming in it and end up being discouraged to continue bother even playing as much? That would still collectively hinder the total realm score

Why would it? People are still winning aren't they? Quoting what I said earlier, you get points IRRESPECTIVE OF YOUR WINS OR LOSSES. This is perhaps the only positive part of a Realm event.

That’s mathematically unlikely to be a major factor as well if sufficiently many players make it to GC, because they will outnumber the farmers and thus match against each other more often than with point farmers.
Furthermore, no one loses all the time against point farmers in GC. For point farming to be a thing, they have to let about half the players who match against them win. Point farming has completely different ramifications in GC than in VT due to the difference in match mechanics. The notion of players getting beat over and over from “point farmers” is a myth, because point farmers don’t win at that high rate. If you’ve lost twenty times in a row and considering quitting in GC, you weee not matching against point farmers, you just aren’t that good, but no one can do anything about that.
I've never come across so many forfaits. Not complaining but I don't get it. Is it their way to gift a quick win and push people up or are some folk not aware of how the points are tallied?
I mean this is a participation event for the entire community… why are wins and losses scored differently in the realm scoring?
Dude its the same... 2 people go in a match winner gets X loser gets Y.. and the realm gets z points. Doesn't matter who wins or loses its alway Z ammount of points. People are just stupid and rage quitting before the 10 second timer is over and the realm is losing Y points.
I was just thinking about this. If we maintain the current pace, the community will hit around the 900 million milestone. That’s a nice chunk of 7* shards but man is that a lot more matches than I typically do in a bg season. I hope the community picks up a bit to hit the 1 billion point titan, but I’m not exactly optimistic. I think people go a bit harder early in the season and then slow down.

If we only hit 700-900m the amount of rewards we get isn't really much better than a regular old solo event season and doesn't really do an anniversary event justice
