Do you happen to use a silicon case? In my experience, using a silicon case makes my phone overheat but if I remove it and play, then it doesn’t heat as much. Just try playing without a case and see if it works.

If you use an otterbox or silicone or any case with rubber that could be the problem. But let you're phone cool down play the game and if it overheats I'd check for hardware or internal issues

Not the first time this has happened. Happened to me 5 years ago or so.

if it's a hardware issue then not much can be done but if it's software based they can at least fix it.

The last time this happened to me on an iPhone was many years ago, with one exception. If you’ve updated iOS recently, I recommend powering off your phone and then turning it back on, and giving it about ten minutes to settle down after doing so before doing any heavy grinding. Sometimes after iOS updates I notice the phone doing a lot of weird stuff in the background, even after the normal update restart. Sometimes this persists for a while unless I do a clean power off and restart. Again, even if the update itself already did this. Doing anything that uses a lot of resources, like playing MCOC for a while, while the phone is in this state can sometimes cause overheating issues.
