Banquet Top 600 Ranked Predictions

Curious what people imagine would be a good target score to reach in banquet to possibly get top 600 ranking? I’m near 100k and would be willing to push a bit further if there’s a chance I reach it but if it’s over 150,000 I’m comfortable leaving it where I’m at now. What are other people shooting for?

I don't think 150k is safe. I believe it was about 140k last year, and this year is on average looking to run 15-20% higher across the board. It might even be higher in the top ranks, because the rewards are arguably more enticing relatively speaking. I was guessing somewhere around 180k, but I would not be surprised at all if top 600 ends up being 200-250k.

If I had an open wallet and I wanted a “safe” score into top 600, I’d probably put up 350k points.

The problem with trying to find a safe score for the very top ranks is they don’t obey averages as closely as lower ranks. When we’re talking about, say, the top 5%, we can try to guess what the players around that mark are doing by extrapolating from the global numbers. We’d expect them to behave roughly in proportion. But that doesn’t have to be the case near the top for two reasons. First, if everyone in the 5% bracket, 10% bracket, 15% bracket were all doing a lot more scoring than we’d expect, we’d also expect that to carry into the overall scoring numbers we’re seeing. But if the top 10 players all decided to spend three times more than they did last year, that wouldn’t show up in the global scoring numbers all that much. There’s millions of dollars of spending flying around, an extra couple hundred grand would not be easy to spot. And second, in lower brackets most people are, if they are aiming at all, doing what you’re doing: estimating a likely safe target and aiming for that. But in the top 600 or 100 or 10, it is less about what the safe number is, and more trying to guess what everyone else is doing and jockeying for that spot.

To put it another way, if I think a safe score for top 1% is 70k, I will aim for 70k. But if I think the safe target for top 600 is 200k, I have to ask myself if there’s 600 other people who all think the same thing as me and will aim for 205, so I should aim for 210, except a lot of people will also think that, so I should go maybe 250k. That kind of meta jockeying is possible, and the degree to which it happens can significantly skew scores. And I’m not plugged into those discussions first hand, and the people who are would almost certainly not be saying.

TL;DR: there might be a safe score for 5%. There’s no safe score for top 5. Around 600, the only safe scores are absurd, but those safe scores are also likely highly inflated. Likely, but not certainly. It depends on how many people are crazier than you.
