It's not. They just want you to open current crystals instead of saving up and getting that brand new hotness for free in the featured instead of buying featured cavalier crystals to get it.

People hoard for a reason, rather it be a new desirable champ coming to the basic or by seeing the upcoming new champs and knowing they will be in the featured. They don't do it just for fun, they do it to try and minimize their chances of getting screwed by a completely rng dependent system. It's the tiniest bit of control you have over the odds and gives a very slight chance of focused progression/rewards. And Kabam doesn't like that.

They want the meta to change monthly, for people to have no shards saved, and then have t go ham on units for crystals and gambling for that meta breaking champ that will surely be coming soon to a cavalier crystals near you.
