Upgrade champions ?

When playing in the versus games I used to pick the same characters as much as I could, now they aren’t there. When I go to check my champions tag, they’re still there but the little arrow that used to be blue to upgrade is now grey, what does this mean? And do they correlate?

    It means you don’t have the upgrade materials to take the character up to another rank. The blue arrow that you do have the upgrade materials, the grey arrow means you don’t
